Ask a simple question...
Throughout this issue, we continually return to one question...
‘what do leaders do?’ The question first popped up at the LMA’s
Annual Management Conference back in October when it was
asked (and, to some extent, answered) by the leadership expert
Jeff Grout. A summary of Grout’s presentation is included in our
look back at the conference, which begins on page 14.
The asking and answering of that seemingly simple question
isn’t confined to those pages, though; the newly-appointed
Northampton Town manager Aidy Boothroyd asks it as part of
an absorbing conversation with the management and education
guru Stuart Timperley (page 38), while sports psychologist
Michael Caulfield offers his own views on the subject (page 56).
Away from that single question, Howard Wilkinson argues
that all managers benefit from that scarcest of commodities, time
(page 44) while Ossie Ardiles gives a fascinating insight into the
border-crossing life of the football player and manager (page 68).
Elsewhere within these pages we have an interview with
Martin O’Neill (conducted just days before his appointment as
manager of Sunderland) in which he reveals some of his own
management philosophies and lifts the lid on life as a player
under Brian Clough (page 20).
Another manager who learned his trade under Clough, Roy
Keane, was in fine, frank form at the LMA conference, where
he was interviewed live on stage by Matt Lorenzo. For those of
you who weren’t there, we’ve included the edited highlights (page
24). Like all highlights, however, these are no replacement for
being there and witnessing the event live. Next year, you should
try to make it along... it’s something that leaders do.
