Fooled by Randomness
,
Nassim Nicholas Taleb argues that
– no matter how clever we believe
we are, or how much success is a
consequence of what we do – chance
plays a far larger part in life than we
might care to admit.
So, how does this fit in with the
concept of having a strong work
philosophy and using strategy to
achieve your objectives?
Having a vision, strategy and
commitment to achieve remain the
three underlying areas which I believe
are the foundations for any success.
However, this book highlighted for
me that on occasion, no matter what
we do, success and achievement can
be the consequence of a completely
random occurrence; a chance
meeting in a restaurant leading
to a contract, your defence being
uncharacteristically distracted in the
final five minutes of a game and
conceding three goals, or simply an
unexpected and unplanned call.
Develop a realistic
vision and philosophy
and commit totally to
achieving success... but
be prepared for chance
to have some impact.
I’ve worked with numerous
managers (in both sport and business)
who have tried to replicate every
detail of a particularly rewarding
phase, only to fail to achieve the
same level of accomplishment; all
because they’ve misunderstood the
impact of context and timing.

MANAGER OF THE MONTH
A run-down of the managers whose results and performances have
most impressed the judging panels during recent months
The LMA hosted an event in October for its business partner the
New York Stock Exchange at the French national football centre at
Clairefontaine. During this event, chief executive Richard Bevan
met with the manager of the France football team Laurent Blanc
(centre) and one of his predecessors, Gerard Houllier (right), to
discuss Clairefontaine’s integral contribution to the success of French
football in light of the impending opening of St George’s Park.
